Looking up Apple's skirt

Too often really good stories fall through the cracks – or between cocktails in this case. Take The Natural Philosopher, a cocktail bar in Hackney.

Two of our content cows recently visited this den to see what they could find in the trough. Apart from the Baltazer cocktail described below, they stumbled upon one of those stories which would sit comfortably on the cover of any self-respecting lifestyle magazine. Take the ingredients: this is the only cocktail bar in the world where you can peer up the skirt of the world’s largest company:  Apple.

Within this historical old Victorian building, North Londoner (read Essex) Paul Marc Davis runs a MacSmith Apple Mac repair shop during the day. In one of the front rooms Apple Macs are piled high – some dating back to the days when Steve Jobs was still overseeing the assembly in person.

Our cows bumped into Davis and had a good chinwag with the former sculptor and actor who spoke rather freely about his “love, hate, love” relationship with Apple. He loves the products but hates the way Apple manipulates and treats its clients. Without getting too technical, Davis is frank on how and why Mac users are “bullied, manipulated, and lied to” by the multinational, often only to hoax the customer into buying a new product. Of course, it’s all good for business because anybody with a stricken Apple who runs into trouble in the official store can find solace that the MacSmith technicians will give it a second, or third, lease of life.

If all hope has gone, it will probably join his Mac museum, which might be the largest in the world if it’s not true “that some eccentric guy in Russia might have a larger collection”.

We’re not going to tell the entire story here. That’s content for another place and time but it sure is an example of how we graze and feed on good stories.
